My dad traveled a lot. Sometimes when he came home he would line us all up for a swat because he just figured we had it coming for stuff we did while he was gone.

That’s what my sisters did. I ended up having a decent relationship with him.
I thought my more gentle way of parenting would be superior, but the results don’t really prove it.
