If your tank is full Id suggest a piece of plywood ontop of a floor jack. And raise it up just enough to touch the tank maybe even just a bit of pressure. Undo the straps and then remove the fuel lines the rubber ones.. Unplug the fuel sender wire and remove the ground strap. To drain the tank I use an old electric fuel pump some hose and a gas can. Undo the fuel sender hose hook it up to the fuel pump and run a longer hose from the outlet side to a gas can then fire up the fuel pump and let it pump the fuel out.
So does the filler neck just push into the tank? Does that mean the filler neck pipe does not need to be removed from the quarter panel?
I would say the filler should have a rubber grommet from filler to tank
For the most part no worries. Do not remove the sender from the tank (until its on the ground) and if you have some vacuum caps maybe put them over the fuel line and return line on the sender. There is always some sort of risk. But I have removed probably 30 or so tanks and never had a fire or explosion. Just be careful and try not to make stupid mistakes. Don't do it while smoking a cig,using a torch, welding, and countless other activities..

Yes there is a seal on the filler neck. When I install my new tank I already installed the filler neck. I did put a little grease on the seal to help get the tank installed. I was a PITA to get it back in. I was on the ground installing it,no lift.
