68 Charger…. On internet couldn’t find a video exclusively for tank removal on a 68Charger… anyone have a step by step sequence in order to remove the tank? Im sure the filler tube is involved?
Thanks

Good question. I'd like to know as well, including safety precautions if the tank is partially full, how and where to drain it, etc.

I must have a different internet than you guys. :) If your tank is full Id suggest a piece of plywood ontop of a floor jack. And raise it up just enough to touch the tank maybe even just a bit of pressure. Undo the straps and then remove the fuel lines the rubber ones.. Unplug the fuel sender wire and remove the ground strap. To drain the tank I use an old electric fuel pump some hose and a gas can. Undo the fuel sender hose hook it up to the fuel pump and run a longer hose from the outlet side to a gas can then fire up the fuel pump and let it pump the fuel out.

Drain/siphon tank unhook fuel gauge wire and gas line. Then unbolt the j bolts that are on the straps I believe 9/16 nut. The j bolts are at the rear of tank. Wiggle tank side to side to loosen seal from filler neck. It will drop out that way.

So does the filler neck just push into the tank? Does that mean the filler neck pipe does not need to be removed from the quarter panel?

I would say the filler should have a rubber grommet from filler to tank

For safety, I was more wondering about grounding prior to removal to prevent spark ignition of any vapors.
Not a big deal?

For the most part no worries. Do not remove the sender from the tank (until its on the ground) and if you have some vacuum caps maybe put them over the fuel line and return line on the sender. There is always some sort of risk. But I have removed probably 30 or so tanks and never had a fire or explosion. Just be careful and try not to make stupid mistakes. Don't do it while smoking a cig, using a torch, welding, and countless other activities.. :) Common sense will see you through this process.
