This old Gtx , had an extensive street racing history, but it’s highlighted event , was a four day super stock eliminator meet , at the old Dickinson Drag Strip in Dickinson Tx , put on by KiLT radio ! We went there , with the car ready to rumble. With it’s custom home built 440 , with Crower cam , aluminum intake , custom ignition, pieced together, old used hooker used headers , homemade fuel line cool can and a major clearance job on the engine! Trans was 727 auto hand built, by older trans guy at Dodge house in Conroe , with custom made manual valve body , with a truck torque converter, that my buddy said would give me better Rpm’s out of the hole and a used half worn set of MH slicks ! The old car was amazing fast for what it was ! Raced four days , and we beat everything that we were matched with! Until it was time for the trophy and money race! I was SS/F and I ran against a SS/A car , owned by the near famous, Shirley Shanahan ! I pulled her out of the hole and near half way , through the quarter , the her old hemi, started doing what they do against a wedge car ! It churned that power out , and right at the lights, She passed me ! For the win ! Boy, was I long faced ! But we got back , to the pits , after our lose , but low and behold. Shirley, came and found me, to remind me, that a had nearly over turned, a National Championship Car ! So , after that, I loaded my car , onto my rusty old trailer, behind my 58 Dodge truck, and returned to Conroe, outrun , but not Beat ! And that my Friends, is how I remember, 1970 or so !
