Been trying to get a few things done and this is one. Hopefully will put it all together this week....if it's not too cold for this southerner. :D

Looking Good will be looking forward to more pics

Neat .. how many are required per rear?
Just two. When you split the case halves, these are the last pieces to come out and are the first to go in...next will be the side gears, plate and springs, spiders and cross shaft. I'll take pics of the whole mess in the next day or so. Used to have pics on another photo site but they went away before I knew it and didn't get the chance to move them. This time I'll copy them to a disc.

I have been hearing for years that this isn't a good idea. From what I recall, this mod results in excessive clearance of the spider gears unless you shim them the exact amount that you remove from the cones.
Not to piss on your efforts ! I was hoping you knew about the need to make additional changes.

Looking good Cranky! I never did much with the cone types but do have one and will likely follow your technique one day. I have a couple of lathes and a mill but nothing exotic.

Yup, I'm aware of all the bad ideas about these units including you should throw them away once they stop locking up but I've been working on these for over 30 years and never had a problems with a reconditioned SG coming back and there are a few that I take care of in 11 second race cars. In a unit that's has bottomed out or has been machined before, I'll add shims between the cone and side gear to make sure the spiders make good contact but it has to really be worn to have excessive clearance plus these cone units have somewhat beefy spiders.

Heck, if you're good with a grinder, you could do them on one lol. Basic mill and lathe here too. 15" LeBlond Regal and a 10x50 Republic Lagun mill. And in the middle of putting this unit together, the batteries in my camera died....figures....
