My 65 Dodge Coronet has a 727 column shift transmission and is currently running a manual valve body transmission. Im only using this car for street use and the column shifter is very sloppy. I know nothing and I mean NOTHING about transmissions. What do I need to do, and can I do it myself, to convert my transmission back to a "regular" shifting one? I was considering going to a floor shifter, but was told there are no aftermarket floor shifters for the 65 727 transmission. Plus, if I wanted to manually shift my car, I would have gotten a 4 speed!....Also, is there any way to adjust the cables or what ever, to take out the slop in the column shifter? Some times it wont even start in park, and I have to shift to neutral to make it start due to the slop messing with the neutral safety switch.

you would need to replace valve body with a correct one for the trans you have in the car . rebuild column to tighten it up check all bushings on all linkages . there some aftermarket that mount to the floor as in the b&m star shifter that most likely would work

I'm assuming this is a 65 trans. Along with the kick down linkage you will need to know if someone deleted the rear pump gears and/or governor. The standard valve body will not work unless these parts are still inside the trans. The trouble is there is no way of knowing without disassembly or trying a standard valve body and seeing if it functions. There were factory 65 floor shifters available.

you are right i forgot about the governor and kick down linkage with a manual valve body thank you

The reason 62-65 need the rear pump gears is for governor feed as well.

Do u have a buddy to help? Is the tranny cable shift or did it get changed to linkage shift. The vb will need to come out. U would need another cable shift valve body. If it has a Trans Go TF-3 kit in it u can reverse it. If it does u will see 2 gold plates sandwiched together held on by 2 vb bolts and a screw. U just have to reverse the order their in. U will need to drill a 1/8 hole in the governor plug in the case. The change the 1-2 shift valve spring back to a factory spring. Kim

Wow....I can already tell that this is way above my paygrade! Let me try this plan of attack instead.....My engine is a 440 out of a '69 GTX. Is there a late model auto trans will bolt up to it? That way I could get rid of my shift linkage a possibly go to an after market floor shifter and not have to search for a transmission shop that works on old stuff.

replacing a valve body is not that hard on a mopar find a f.s.m for your car you could go to my mopar .com and look at what they have for your car but any 60's 727 are very close on replacement so looking at a 68 trans repair manual will tell you on how to remove and replace. there a few vid's on you tube for the 727 trans . when you get the kick down linkage then you may need advise from those hear that have gotten the parts and how to adjust to compere to the f.s.m

the governor is in the tail shaft housing and the manual will tell you how

i know that is what i said to get info from some hear or get a f.s.m

I believe I have found the answer to my problems. Classic Industries sell a TCI Street Fighter transmission (1967-1979) that will work with my '69 440 big block. Its only $2k with converter. I notice they also sell an aftermarket floor shifter for my current transmission, so I have two ways to go.

someone on hear just listed one for sale .dont buy the t c i look on hear and someone can find or build you one.

Don’t buy a TCI tranny. Their not very good and don’t last. Google TCI tranny problems. Kim

Ok...I also found a B&M for the big block but it lists only for 1967 and up. That would get me away from the cable system and allow me to use aftermarket shifter. But I was wondering if it will bolt up to my trans mount on my '65?

may have to swap tail shaft housing .

Sorry no it won’t. How far r u from Indy. Both Cope Racing and A&A Transmissions are close there. Maybe there is some kind of a conversion u can do. Like cutting the Center out of a 65 and 66 to make what u need. Not sure if it’s possible. Kim

The 65 and earlier trans mount bolt pattern has a different spread than 66 and up. The mounts and tail shaft housings will not interchange between a 65 and earlier and 66 and later.
