Max wedge port on 915 heads?

CSA isn’t everything in a race engine, but its most of it. Shape would be next.
 
I have 452 heads with the roof enlarged out to where they are .005" taller than an Indy 440-2 MW intake port intake. Which is still a shorter opening than a true MW port.

There is physically not enough material in any non MW head to port them out to true MW height or width.

Somewhere on here or FABO I have several photos and the measurements posted.

Using the A&A intake with the standard 440 ports is actually better than using a MW intake in my opinion as you can get some airspeed.

On the standard port A&A intake I had on the engine in my 63 Plymouth I cut the top off off and did a lot of work on inside reducing the volume in the corners, plus other work.

I had it on the 63 Plymouth for years, but I still didn't feel it worked the best. When I switched it over to a ported Edelbrock Victor intake it had a much crisper throttle response that

resulted in 3/10 improvement on the 1/8 mile, so this just shows how poor old the old intake design works compared to a modern intake.

Time has turned sixpacks and maxwedge crossrams into expensive eyewash. The crossram is over sixty years old, and the Sixpack is more than fifty five.
They both can still work very well, but spending the money for either and expecting a big performance boost is foolish. If you're willing to spend the money for the look, go ahead, but don't expect to be any faster than modern manifolds and carb setups.
I took a modified tm7 and 850 dp (to maxwedge ports) off my roller motor max head 440, and put a crossram and two 750 competition afb's on. After final tuning, the crossram picked up.........nothing.

Nope. An original 426 max, so I'm gonna try to redo it a bit milder. Next for my Savoy will be a 522 with Victor max heads with a super victor/dominator intake.
Edit: the block is a 426 max, but it's. 070 over, so an actual 440. It has Arias standard 440 pistons in it.
 
For what it's worth using a 906 head with a cross ram. Years ago my Max Wedge motor was broke. Running for points in N/SS we needed a motor. A friend had a 440 with a solid cam with mild 906's. At the time the rules dictated a crossram. Decided to just bolt one on and run it with no port match. Immediate issue. Exhaust flow from the breathers. The Max wedge intake doesn't fully block the heat rise passage. Pulled the intake and fabbed aluminum plates held in with one small screw tapped into the head at the bottom of the heat riser port. The intake setting on the head clamped the top of the plate. To my amazement in testing it ran 11.60's.

Unported factory MW heads don’t really flow all that great, they’re just “bigger” than their non-MW cousins(but not necessarily bigger where it matters).

Imo, if there aren’t rules dictating which heads you can use, it’s just “better” to start out with some aluminum aftermarket pieces.
AFAIK none of the more popular aluminum choices have the exhaust heat x-over to worry about.

TF does stipulate the 240’s won’t accommodate the factory type x-ram manifold.
I assume this is related to the overhang of the VC rail that those heads have.
But thats not an issue with the RPM type heads(or the several import variants out there).
With a bit of mild bowl work, and opened up yo MW size, they can easily out flow a stock MW head.

That’s assuming you really feel like you need to run the factory style x-ram, on a pretty stock appearing engine.
