Because of the good sized diaphragm in a mechanical pump, it draws fuel pretty well.
An electric pump has only a few small vanes in it, designed to PUSH fuel, so it draws (sucks) poorly. As a result, you want the least possible length needed to draw fuel, and if it can be gravity fed, so much the better.
Mounted well above the tank, strike one
Mounted way forward, far away from tank, strike two
Fairly small pump, too (depending on engine combo) potential strike three.
Relocate, and give it another shot. I think it will work OK.
And there is surely nothing wrong with learning!
