MY NEW 1964 POLARA 500 CONVERTABLE

Nice car. I'm just down the road from you in Hartland, Mi. Looks like a great car to restore.

This is what I found in the cap. Do they both go on the post, or does the ground looking wire bolt to the base, or neither?
Is there an easy way to drain the gas tank, or just pull it??

Looks like you have a dual point dizzy converted to just one set of points. I think you can just remove that heavier wire and keep it in case you want to go back to dual points. Or install the other set of points that's missing and run both. Or did you remove it yourself?
Here is what the single point dizzy looks like.

Ah, im missing a set of points. Now its making sense. I cant find any points local, but they are cheap enough on line. Do any of you guys have any knowledge of setting the points in a dual point distributor? Is it a PITA, or should I drop a couple hundred and convert it to Electronic Ignition and be done with it? Do they work with only one set?

Yes they will work with one set. They will operate as if they were a conventional single point distributor.

The ideal way is to use a dwell meter. You have to do one set of points at a time, isolating (disconnecting) the other set.
You can adjust each set useing feeler guages, having a good eye and touch doing it but it's not as exact as useing a dwell meter.

congrats....... awesome car!

never had an issue with dual points, not my preference, but I dig the whole mechanical aspect........ and points will never leave you stranded......... keep a spare condenser in the glove box

Thanks for all your great feedback and Ideas. I did find 2 full sets of points online for $15.00, so I have those coming. The single set that's on it now don't have any voltage going through them. They are new and I did clean them up with emery paper with no luck. I do want to keep it as original as possible. But its nice to know for $150.00 the full kit to convert over it is available if needed.

welcome to FBBO great looking drop top keep us posted on your progress

Welcome aboard. Not sure how I missed your post this long. The Polara is cleaning up nicely. Glad you were able to pick it up. We are almost neighbors, I'm on the west side of Lansing in Delta Township. It'll be great having another Mopar in the area. Look forward to seeing it on the road. Maybe we'll cross path on the road one of these days. I have a 65 Coronet that I've almost gotten road worthy. Metallic Brown with white top & interior. I'm hoping to at least be able to drive it a few times before having to put it to bed for the winter.

Nice to hear from some local folk. Not many old mopars around here in Oldsmobile country. Good news, I got her running. I ended up getting a hei conversion unit and she came to life. It runs great. Not even one exhaust leak. I bypassed the gas tank and used a garden tractor tank, it sucks the tank dry in a couple minutes. Bad news, heater core leaking. Oh well, more fun for me. Plenty more to do to her, brakes, new top, heater core, tires, rear springs. I'll stop there, I don't want to scare myself, lol.
