Hi
I started my 400 barn find charger today runs good no noise or anything until I hooked up the fan, power steering belt, and crank. Once that belt was hooked up I hear a grinding noise on start up and it continues to get louder with acceleration. I took the fan off and just had the belt hooked to the fan pulley, crank and power steering and the motor didn't make any noises. I tried a new clutch fan and had the same outcome. I am lost, could it be something in the drive line, starter sticking?

Any chance one of the fan bolts is to long?
Nope I checked that, I also took off the clutch fan and just left the pulley on with the belt and started the car and no noise. The noise only seems to start when the clutch fan is on

Do you have a shroud? Fan hitting it?
Remember the fan will try to suck the shroud towards itself

Yes I have a shroud, I took it off to rule that out and no success, Weird only makes the noise when clutch fan is on. Having me believe the new water pump I have might be defective.

Check the water pump for up and down/in and out play on the shaft. Weight of the fan may be making the bearings grind. Or the blade could be hitting the shroud. Id say Water pump though.

I had an RX7 and the water pump went out. That small rotational distortion made the rotary engine feel like it was going to disintegrate.

It sounds like a bearing in water pump. Dry. Especially if sitting awhile? Things can throw all sorts of strange sounds.
