Mystery Rods Inside Poly Head Cooling Passage

I pulled the cylinder heads on the poly that I swore I didn’t want to spend any money on after discovering a few bent pushrods. Down the rabbit hole we go…

I noticed something odd inside the cooling passages of both heads. There appears to be lengths of metal rod or wire inside… I’ve included pictures. They are loose in there, and can move around. Has anyone ever seen something like this? Figured I should try and learn what they are before blindly removing them.

They were in the sand mold when the block was cast. They don’t always come out. Seen them inside 60’s BB engines also.

funny I just did a poly and it also had some inside the water jackets.

Leave them alone. They have been in there since cast over 50 years ago and have not hurt anything. You might cause issues by trying to remove them

Thank you, I didn’t think about them being part of the casting. Honestly with some of the stuff I’ve found on this car I was half expecting them to have been shoved in there by a previous owner to “fix” something…

Had the same rods inside my 1975 440 block. Not a big deal I assume they are used in the casting of the block.

Normal stuff. They hold the packed foundry sand together for the water jacket cores.
