I have a late 60's 383 that I would like to warm up a little and need some info on cam choices. I will be using a Performer intake with a 650 to 750 cfm carb. I will also be using HP exhaust manifolds and at least 2 1/2" exhaust pipes moving the spent gas from a set of 915 ported, polished and gasket matched heads . My converter is 2500 rpm and rear end gears should be limited to 3:55.1 with a max of 3:91.1

I really don't know much about cams... but, I got one from Comp Cams for my 383 Part #21-221-4

Gross Valve Lift Intake .447 Exhaust .455
Duration @ .006 Tappet lift 256 268

I havn't been too impressed with performance, but the car idles nice and gets surprisingly good gas milage. I got about 18 mpg on a highway trip where I was doing 90 mph for most of the time.

I also have the 2 1/2 inch exaust. My engine is a 1970 383 with 66 hp heads on it. I had it built by a local machine shop. I am still running a 2 bbl carb on it though. (at least until I have the money for a 4bbl)

Call Hughes Engines or Diamondback Engines and get yourself a custom grind. Most OTS cams have a chebby grind.

I recommend the mopar purple shaft Hemi Grind cam. Bn running it 5 years & am very happy with it, specs are .474 lift and 284 ad duration. I have the same heads 915 w/oversized valves on a stock 78 440 w/headers and 2 1/2" & 750 vac holley. This cam has a great lump to it but will idle all day. It's a perfect street cam, and has massive low end and mid range power. It's a monster off the line. I just ran the camquest chart and came up with the same spec cam as one of the choices.

Glad you said it 66, I totally agree. Alot of the new grinds like more exhaust duration and or lift. This Chrysler design has stood the test of time and I used the same one in my small block. Right now we are putting together a turbocharged 318, I ran this cam through a computer program for turbo cams and was shocked it came in close to some high dollar split profile large LSA cams. It will be our choice.

Mancini is showing two different 284/484 cams, which one are you using??
