No oil pressure on start up after oil change.

Factory service manuals, trade schools, factory training classes, never read or heard any say to fill the oil filter. Put it on and go, times a wastin! And they warranty these engines.

Will it hurt anything, probably not. Is it necessary? NOPE!
I have allways done the same, this is the 1st time any engine of mine failed to pick up pressure.
Not sure what the heck happened.
I'm going to napa tomarrow for a new filter , I will install it empty and see what happens.
All I know was that was a eye opener once the lifters started ticking and I was not in the seat.

Filling the oil filter is like packing the oil pump with Vaseline less work for it to pump oil. Primes faster.

During my ordeal, I packed my pump with STP, and still no prime. I pulled the pan, and changed the pick-up tube. I bought a new Mellings pump and packed it with STP. With each change, I installed a new Fram filter, and it would never prime. I likely f@@ked away about a month before trying new Wix filter. Pretty well 45 years of owning up to 4 cars with big blocks, this had never happened to me before.

Shouldn't need to "pack a pump" either.
I was told my my engine guy to do it so I did. It seemed to be fine priming it. But I'm sure you are correct too. I was just following orders. My 440 was the first entire engine I built so I wanted it to go right.

Will you, or any others that agreed with you, please educate me on how to fill an oil filter on a BB Mopar.
What do you mean? Like you can't technically fill it 100%?

I've been pre-filling the filters for 30+ years, don't see any reason not to and commonsense says it's gotta be better than running the engine potentially with no oil for even a few seconds.

On my daily driver it's vertical so easy to do, the small block poly it's on an angle but still able to be pre-filled.

Horizontal filters on the big blocks - I'd fill it and leave it for 10 minutes to soak in, then spin it on.

Since the internet was invented some clowns now claim that filling from the center of the filter is putting "unfiltered" oil into your engine...if the oil is that dirty coming out of the container you have bigger issues I reckon.

Thank you I didn't realize that's a thing.

Curious if this bad Wix has "made in USA" stamped on it, or is it from somewhere overseas? I haven't gotten any overseas made 51515's yet, but heard rumors that might be coming.

I always half fill a new filter. Your system lost its prime, perhaps the pump is not very strong. Those are the only instances it has happened over the years. I would fill the filter and manually prime if you have a priming rod and drill.

I always put a little in the filter. Of course you can't fill it and spin it on without a big mess when it screws on horizontally. That goes without saying. Make sure you lube the gasket as well.

Hey 67 coronet, I've always only used Wix oil filters on my 383. Never had the issue you described. Never pre filled the filter.
Something you don't mention is the age of your oil pump. If it's the original, might want to consider replacing it. They don't last forever.
If you do replace it, pack it with Vaseline petroleum jelly, it needs this to prime and it won't hurt anything. It's alll in the name of the product..

I will check that this morning.

Thanks, That and the pump drive were the 1st two things that I thought of after I got it shut down.
This engine and the pump are close to 40k on miles ( motor home 440 )
It has allways had plenty of oil pressure and did once again after I put the used filter back on.
With the new oil in a warm engine it shot right up to 60/65 lbs.
Once it hits 180 to 190 temp it will idle at 35 lbs and at road speed carry 60.
I agree though, anymore trouble like that I will dig deeper than the pump shaft.

Here's an interesting excerpt from a similar story.

First off I am sure that WIX makes a great filter. So sure I put them on both my Cruisers. With that being said a faulty 51515 roached my 1FZ.

snip

Luckily I had kept it and all its contents because when he looked at it he discovered the bypass valve had not been installed like it should have been in my filter. He said he believed I got an oil pressure surge from the valve sticking open in my oil pan and since the filter had no bypass valve to help keep the drain back valve from being loose it dislodged and blocked off the filter totally.

If you're using a WIX oil filter read this
