help my 65 727 like the title says i have no reverse all forward gears work fine could it be the low revese band needs adjusted or is there another problem tranny doesnt slip or any thing its wierd just started it and went to back it out of the garage and no reverse fluid was low put topped it off and still nothing any ideas?thanks.

i am no trans expert, but dont rear and low share the same band?if it goes forward and not reverse at all, then i would expect an internal problem and not just an adjustment.sorry.

Yes, Low & reverse do share the same band/drum. You can check the shift linkage adjustment by dropping the pan and making sure that when the shifter is in reverse that it is actually in the reverse detent in the valve body. Other than that there is no easy fix. The right way to troubleshoot it is to,
1. Check the hydraulic pressures.
2. Adjust the low/reverse band
3. Disassemble and clean the valve body
4. Check and clean/repair the low/reverse servo
Like I said, no easy fix. Unless you have the tools and expertise you are probably going to end up in the transmission shop. Sorry.

The low/reverse band is what i would point the finger at.

Had this problem on a few trannys and every time thats what was wrong

Sometimes just needed adjustment, one time found the drum and band were metal on metal completly wiped out

I too have had that problem and the car still went forward

Sounds like the reverse band or reverse band servo. The servo can also become cocked in the bore if it is far out of adjustment.

if you have 1st gear, you should have reverse gear as the valve body applies fluid pressure to the rear servo in both positions, reverse is almost triple the amount of pressure though... possible causes:

1) rear servo seal worn and will seal with a lower pressure rather than a higher pressure OR servo is damaged - fix, remove servo (can be done, you just have to remove the reverse band strut in order to have enough movement of the rear lever to remove the servo from the housing

2) VB issue: possible causes - shifter piston having actually physical damage (i.e. ovalled the VB housing) in or around the fluid transfer slot for reverse gear, fix: replace valve body

recommendations:

before dropping pan and removing servo, find a pressure tester and attach the tester to the rear servo port and with the car secure and running, have the shifter engaged into first (check pressure reading) and then in reverse (check pressure reading)

if pressures read fine (then I am stuck) if they do not, then you have confirmed your rear servo being the culprit R&R

Reverse is two elements which are the low reverse band and the front clutch. The front clutch also works in third so if it was a problem you would not have third. Here is an easy way to check the low reverse band. In drive the L/R band is not on and the overrunning clutch (sprag) holds but in low the L/R band comes on and gives eng braking. Just put it in low and get up to 10 or so mph and let off the gas and see if it has eng braking. If not then you do have a L/R band problem. I fixed my buddies Duster without pulling the trans as I pulled the pan and then worked the L/R piston out and replaced the torn seals. Worked fine. You may get lucky and fix it in the car. Ron

thanks for all the replies i dropped the pan and there were 2 big metal pieces in the pan 1 was the reverse band strut and 1 of the big pieces off the reverse band i know this is a long shot but can the reverse band be changed with the tranny still in the car with out pulling it this really sucks tranny was rebuilt about 3 years ago and only has about 3000 miles at the most on it thanks.

nope, it has to be removed to replace the rear band.
