What are these for? 1973 Lincoln Mark IV 460. The one on the top is on the thermostat housing. The one on the bottom appears to be a heater hose. Neither are hooked up and they are not leaking coolant.

Emission control. Emission tag under the hood often gave them a name. If its your car get the factory service manual.
 
those are temp sensors,when they heat up they allow Vacuum to go from port to port.
you will need a factory manual or another untouched lincoln to see where they go to originally.

thoughts on those 460-s.
they are often set below optimim timing,and have miles of vacuum hoses.
they will get horrible gas mileage no matter What you do,so adjust it for max performance.

you dont need all of that vacuum and smog crap,just make sure that your Temp Controls are hooked to the Right vacuum sources.
once you have all that sorted,and have everything you Dont need >> removed/hoses and plugs installed where hoses were,
start increasing the timing until you find the sweet spot.
i would wager that you probably still have the factory 600 single feed holley.
if you have an Edelbrock carb,swap that on,at least youll save Some gas ;)

The upper one I believe is called a Ported Vacuum Switch.

The lower looks like some type of vacuum operated heater core bypass.
I've always understood that, when functioning as intended, that valve would allow the engine to reach normal temp quicker and also save wear on the heater core.

But all that vacuum operated sh...tuff?

Nothing to do with heater core or water flow. Just a temperature controlled vacuum switch.

Yes, I plan on remedying that. I just got the car and really haven’t done anything to it yet.

Right now it’s a bone stock survivor with 63k original miles and everything is as it came from the factory. I’m still undecided about changing anything, but if I do it will get a top end package and a different timing gear set. I will run stock manifolds and custom dual exhaust. That should wake it up a little bit. I’m not so much worried about gas mileage.
 
Thanks for the replies. I figured they were emissions junk. I briefly searched through the FSM but couldn’t find them so I thought you knowledgeable folks could help and you did. Much easier than digging through the FSM with a magnifying glass. My eyes aren’t what they used to be.
 
Was the underhood diagram gone?
 
Have fun trying to find a replacement. If its not required in your area to do smog tests/certification, leave it disconnected.
