NOT my Alternator???

73 Satty died the other day. Just stopped running. Jumped it and it started. Turned my headlights on and it wanted to stall again. I checked my terminals.....a lil loose. Tightened them up and jumped again.......ran ok til I disconnected the positive and it quit immediately. I thought this was my alternator but had it checked at Pep Boys and it PASSED on all tests. Any suggestions? I thought that was a surefire way to test the alternator and it meant it was bad if it did not continue to run........thanks!!!

Buy a new battery

Take the battery and give it a good charge out of the car and then have it load tested. If it's tests good, then you need to look elsewhere for your problem. Also, just because you pulled the positive cable off doesn't mean that the alternator isn't working....what it means is there's no charge coming to the battery. Regulator or even a break in the wiring but there could be other problems too.

Will do thanks.........taking the time this am to put alternator back in since it test good at Pep Boys and found my coolant leak also. That tiny lil rubber cap that was put on the water pump since Im not using my ac. Just needed to take the time and tinker a little. Pulled the battery and off to have it tested. My next investment is going to be a charger/jumper box. Thanks for your input guys. Much appreciated.

Also keep in mind that the alternator's job is to maintain the battery and not as a charging unit. Charging a very low battery with the car's alternator can over heat it. Even when I buy a new battery, I trickle charge it up before installing it. So far, I guess it works well doing that because the alternator on my 95, 97 and my 2000 vehicles are all still original....knock on wood lol
