Now for something completely different . . . an anvil stand . . . for my shop

Got a little more progress done tonight after I got home from work . . .

Not too sure I explained me "error" quite, so I've got pics to show it . . . ( I guess I am human ! ! ! - LOL )

This is what I ended up with . . . close, but not "quite" right . . .

What I need is this set up - which clearly shows the end on the right piece in the wrong place . . .

So I cut that end off . . . and I'll weld another end cap on the other side and I'll be good . . .

It's cut off . . . now just to weld the end cap on the other side . . . and on to the next step of the process . . .

Much better . . . when you get it right the "second time" . . .

But it's looking good . . .

This is how they'll be positioned . . . now I just need to get them blended together with the right width . . .

I'm happy with it . . . should turn out nice . . . ( I hope ) . . .

NO . . . that is not my welding table . . . just using it to hold the anvil stand legs in the proper orientation so that I can determine where to go next . . . and how . . .

Yes it is . . . a fairly new addition to the shop tools . . .

More progress . . .

Time to work on some "customization" for this stand . . . so I need to pull out the big guns . . .

Need to drill some 2 1/2" holes . . . so I thought I would use this . . .

However . . . when I plugged it it and it sparked . . . it needed some attention . . .

and the wires in the handle for the trigger were just as bad (or worse) . . .

Now the drill is sporting a brand new cord . . . and ready to be used . . . ( maybe ? ! ? )

Decided that the had drill was not the best idea, and opted for the drill press and clamping it to the table . . .

So the legs are now customized . . . BSH style . . . and ready for the next step . . .

Here is my plan for fitting the legs together under the base . . . they will be intertwined with each other . . .

Fighting with getting all the mill scale off of these things . . . dang it's really thick . . .

Gawd . . . never seen mill scale ( maybe it was mill slag ) this thick and this hard to remove ever ! ! !

But . . . I got them all cleaned up ( got a few areas that need some attention ) . . .

Top one - didn't clean it up before welding the foot base in place . . . ( bad welder ) . . . Ugh ! !

Just means a little more work to try and get it cleaned up now . . . pay now or pay later . . . LOL

The interlocking legs added a lot to the stability . . . even when this thing was not welded, it was very sturdy . . .

thought about pulling out the anvil and setting it on the stand . . . then when I got to it,

Are you going to have this stand bolted to the ground? It looks quite sturdy and likely stable for hammering on, but if you have an insert for the pritchell hole to bend bar stock, you could tip it over in a hurry.

Not sure . . . initially, it will not be bolted down . . . not sure how much forging I will be doing, but getting ready to learn how to do it . . .

Maybe should have calculated the resonant frequency of each leg and adjusted the hole size differently in each leg to come up with a "three tone chime" when you strike the anvil. With all hole sizes the same, you'll just have "one" tone. Just a thought to make it a bit different than everyone else's anvil stand!

Too Funny . . .

Who says the holes are all "perfectly" the same, since they were done by hand . . . Might still get 3 different tones from them . . .

Only one way to know for sure . . .

I agree, that definitely has to add a lot of strength and rigidity to the stand.

I know Larry well enough to know every project has to get a little added spin to it, nothing is plain or boring... Sure a log would perform the same duty but would also be boring to build and to normal lol.
