Oil change immediately after break in or after some miles?

Hey all
Just broke in a fresh 383 in my 68 coronet conv tonite. All went well. Ive always changed the high zinc break in oil at 500 miles, but ive been reading that alot of guys change it right after break in. What do you all do?

On any fresh rebuild, I change the oil right after break-in. I may be paranoid, but I want to be sure any little shavings get drained out. I do the same with new vehicles or motorcycles - run it hard for about twenty miles, go home and change the oil.

With the cost of break in oil hitting $75-$100 for 5 or 6 quarts these days I have run that oil close to 500 miles, BUT I change the oil filter shortly after making fine tune adjustments, any leak sealing and a few road miles. I normally run flat tappets and there is/has been much debate as to moly based cam break-in lubes clogging up filters pretty quick. Filters are pretty cheap.

To give everything the benefit of the higher zinc and other agents in the break in oil I run it for a couple hundred miles anyway, 300 ish.

A couple hundred miles isn't a bad idea. Most of the break in wear will occur then. Heck may be the most in the first 15 or 20 min of running. There is no wrong answer as long as you change it fairly soon after first start up. I bet engines that get run on the dyno get their oil changed before they are installed back in the car. Why wouldn't you.

I use break in oil and after camshaft run in I change oil and filter while it's still hot. Then use more break in then go 500 miles.

Expensive? Maybe but how much time and money to replace the cam and lifters again?
