Is it worth it trying to clean the screen in a oil pickup tube.

Yes.

Soak in brake clean then.

Sure any kind of parts cleaner and a stiff brush.
You can even use soap and water and blow it dry afterwards.

You can pry open the crimping around the screen & remove it. Re-crimp after cleaning. Done it many times.
