OIL type

Ask a hundred people, get a hundred different answers. I've been using Brad Penn 10w30 for years without any problem.
 
I like Rotella 15w/40 in the old cars. None of mine are performance or heavy valve springs.

Agreed. Amsoil Signature Synthetic. High Zinc, 10-40. Only one of 2 real synthetics.
 
Racing oils or diesel oils have higher Zinc levels.
Racing oils, yes. Diesel oils, not so much, anymore. All modern diesels run roller lifters and have catalytic converters so they don't have near the zinc anymore. I'd stick to the racing oils or the specialty high zinc oils depending on what you're running.
 
Valvoline zr1 of whatever weight your clearances and pump are up to and some Lucas oil zdpp. I maintain about 60 cars in a private collection from a 57 bug to 1100hp vette and nothing's skipped a beat
 
I'm running Valvoline ZR1 20w50 in my Hemi. It has high zinc.
 
For the average engine with a few performance goodies, I use regular Valvoline 20-40 weight with ZDDPlus additive. Change oil and filter at 2-3000 miles..IMO raceing oil is a waste of money, and some are not detergent........................MO

It's true that even the diesel oils are reducing their zinc levels a bit, but they are still higher than the regular SN rated motor oils.
