Can anyone tell me where the best place is to get a one wire altenator? I have looked in Summit and Jegs, is there anywhere esle to look?:head_smack::head_smack:

A brief Google search yielded some results, but pretty much all GM products, don't know if that would bother you. There's a bunch you can buy through Amazon.com, and i found a couple on Jegs too.

I guess i'm more new to the game than i thought i was, i've never heard of this. Anyone tell me how it works?

Powermaster sells them.............Seen them on ebay. As you probably have already figured out, they're not the cheapest thing on the planet.

Are you refering to a "one wire ground" alternator, ie pre 1970??? Like came on all pre 70 cars?
If so, then should be very common. Key is to get one rebuilt by a good electric shop, not mass built by an import wholesaler.

Maybe he's talking about the "One Wire" you run a 8/6/4 guage (depending on length/amps) wire to the battery from the alternator, and that is because it's internally regulated. Other than that...no other wires necessary

Probably referring to a self exciting alternator. They use a special regulator that makes use of the residual magnetism in the rotor for the initial excitation of the field. Available in many makes/configurations, most any alternator shop can put one together for you. Some, not all, draw a small amount of standby current that can drain the battery over time.

Oh neat, thanks "1more". I guess that makes a lot more sense than having separate circuitry for excitation. I've only just recently looked in to alternators and how they work/differ from generators. Learning more every day!

Bought a 1 wire gm one a while back for under $50.00 at advance auto parts.Gotta be careful of the amps as most GM ones are higher than the mopar stuff

GM is the best when it comes to the amperage capability and i know it's not much but also style, the bad news is the mounting patterns don't always match, had to modify my brackets and make an new lower one, but it looks better than stock and 140 Amps push makes it worth the extra hassle. try getting from Jegs of Summit, they don't know mopar but they can get you the right alternator if you give them the specs you need.

I just relocated my 100 amp 1 wire alternator from having it mounted on the power steering ear of the water pump to under the motor plate low on the passenger side:icon_rambo:

This alternator was obtained long before a 1 wire MOPAR alternator was available:icon_hang:

Tuff Stuff alternators are available through summit, I have one in the Cordoba. It's a Mopar alternator not GM.

This is exactly what I am looking for. I have looked at the tuff stuff and powermaster, just got to make the decision now which one I want, and yes they are not the cheapest part around!!:icon_rambo:
