While I am painting the exterior of my 1972 SSP project, I was thinking about coating the floor of the passenger compartment, the trunk, and maybe the underside of the hood with one of the coating kits that are used for bedliners. Never tried that stuff before. Am I on the right track? Want something semi-economical and durable for the do it your-selfer. Thought I should ask before I go down to Autozone and make a purchase. I don't have hardly any rust issues.

I rattle caned the floors and under the car with Rustoleum truck bed liner of my 65 Belvedere.Held up great.I also used it on the floors of my 64 Dart and left the floor bare. Same thing not even wear marks from shoes. Good cheap product

I was just reading the spray can Rust Oleum truck bed liner is not recommended for temperatures exceeding 200 degrees so it might not be ideal for under hood use.

I wouldn't do any surface that's exposed or can't be covered....just because it's not supposed to be there. Floors can be covered and hoods can have insulating mats but other than outside of that....it's not for me.

That's good advice Cranky. I can cover the trunk floor, cabin floor, and hood so it should work out there. I wonder what sources have insulators for hoods, either custom fit or universal?

I agree the underside of the hood should be body color, but it is a little ugly looking after so many years and not the easiest thing to prepare for paint and it's bound to get dirty thanks to it's location over the motor. I'm still searching for the next best thing to the way the factory did it, I guess. Maybe a practical upgrade, if it won't look factory, at least easier to maintain, etc.

If you do undercoat the underside of the hood, it will be a pain in the *** to keep clean, best thing is a smooth surface that you can wipe with degreaser or other cleaner to keep the gunk from building up.

I'm with ' idrivemopar'. I'd spend more time cleaning and prepping the hood now, and give it a nice coat of paint. If you coat it with something, over time its really going to get dirty, be impossible to clean, and then the only option is to throw the hood away.
