I wanna try painting my 440 hemi orange in my garage with a hvlp gun. I bought all the air dryers, etc. for my compressor but i have never bought paint to put in a hvlp gun before. What do i need? Should i use a primer, whats an activator?, do i clear coat. Any companys better than others for looks and durability. I heard u-tech is good and resistant to gasoline. Any help would be much appreciated.

Have you painted anything with a gun? If not get ready for a learning curve and sticker shock on paint products(way more expensive than rattle can paint). Everyone has their opinion on products and brands. I prefer an epoxy primer on bare metal and then either base/clear or a single stage paint. Do some reading about automotive paint products and if you have a tech college nearby consider taking a night class. Here is a link to get you started.

For the reason's eric383 stated and considering what it is I'm curious why you wouldn't just go rattlecan? 2 cans of Hemi Orange and you're done!

Like the high gloss loook instad of the rattle can look

Mopar Performance Race Hemi Orange rattle cans. Note gloss...NOT comparing with a professional paint job, but total cost was under $20. and I still have 1/2 a can left. Worked for me...

Sorry about the double picture posting... It'll teach me not to answer a phone call before I hit the submit button.

You will probably have around $200 invested in product if you want to go the automotive paint route. If you still have the bug to try your gun get some farm/implement primer and top coat. It is way cheaper. Follow the directions on the can on what type of reducer and how much to use and recoat times. You may have to add more reducer than what is recommended depending on your gun. If I remember correctly the Allis Chalmers orange is pretty close in color to Hemi orange. Maybe someone else can chime in. See if you can find a scrap hood or flat metal to practice on. Good luck.
