poly 318 transmission selection.

Ok so im sure ive got a 727 in my coronet now. I'm going to build that trans and put a 383 in front of it for another project, as for the poly i've got, i want to put a good old 4 speed behind it. I would like to know what my options are as far as manual transmissons go, I know the A-833 is the usual choice, how ever i've been hearing and reading that modern Chrysler manual transmissons can also be bolted up to old poly engines. I would also like to know if there are different A-833 transmissons, for instance is the poly 318 4 speed different from the ones they put behind a 440 or 426. If they are is it just a differnet tailshaft, belhousing etc.? I dont want to get all excited, drop money on a trans and then find out that the bolt pattern isnt even close!

Your current 318 727 will not bolt up to a big block.
A 273, 318, 340, 360 powered 4 speed setup from a B or E body should bolt up to your poly. You'll also have to modify your crossmember. Clutch linkage is a different issue. '62-'65 stuff only. You'll also need to cut the floor and install the 4 speed hump. Pretty big job but possibly cool results. I love poly's.

The 833 4 speeds are pretty much the same across the board except for things like gear ratios etc. A big block box will bolt onto a bell housing that's mounted to a small block. The Hemi and 440 transmission has a different size input shaft but so long as you have the correct clutch, it can be used too. The major differences were things like 69 and older didn't have the rear shifter mount like the 70 and newer do and the ones for the 'A' body cars have a short tailshaft. There were other internal changes made over the years of production but those won't keep them from fitting into the different year of cars....so long as you have the correct bell housing, linkage etc.

That's right! A poly engine is and 'A' engine like the 'LA' engines...same bolt pattern which are different than the 'B' engines.
