Only the post car A bodies and early post car B bodies had the tall roof that looked like they were made for coneheads. 68 69 b bodies roofs are the same height as the non post cars
66 Belvedere 2dr sedan has pretty much the same windshield rake angle as a 68-69 road runner......the difference in roof height can hardly be seen unless the two are sitting next to each other. I'm thinking the C pillars and the shape of the back window is what's making you see a conehead car. Now I agree with you on the A body sedans lol
 
I'm guessing it makes the transition (sedans)
less labor intensive when building convertibles,
or cars with removable tops.
