I put the standard 727 Filter into my 1962 pushbutton trans. The filter I removed was somewhat smaller, and more of a mesh screen type . Would using the standard stock filter cause any problems (weird shifting)? I also put on a deeper pan with the filter extension kit. Just bought this car, maybe I've got bigger problems.

Make sure the filter depth extension block, has the correct holes in it to pass the fluid. The older PB transmissions have different ports...

The push button trans filter has 2 holes for fluid pickup. You extension needs 2 passages also. Don’t drive the car anymore until you take it apart and see what you installed. One passage will be a problem.

Do you have your old filter to look at?

Does anyone make an extension block for PB trans ? The one I used was from ebay. Just looked at them...they all look to be single hole style :(

Only a mile your probably Okay... On the extension block, just drill the extra hole...

You could check with Rick at A&A Trans, He should have the correct extension blocks available...

If you used the wrong filter, meaning one hole in place of two, you would starve the rear pump supply. Actually, and I'm guessing here, all that means is the smaller sized rear pump would never take over, which is what it supposed to do at highway speed. I think the whole unit would continue proper lubrication, which is what's most important.... So, doubt you did any damage. As far as Dacron or the original brass screen filter, either will do fine, but you are going to want to find the right pieces parts for the extension and two hole filter type for your trans. A&A definately makes/sells the early type two hole extension you need for your pre '65 unit. Also, you didn't really say, are you having some sort of trouble, or is it working good as is??? HTH, Lefty71

***EDIT*** I do see you said weird shifting.... yes indeed, I think the valve body is confused once it starts looking for rear pump pressure, which is dead with your current set-up.....

A&A Transmissions near Indianapolis have the proper 2-hole extensions. If you have a billet 1-hole extension, you can drill a second hole in it, using the original small filter gasket as a guide. Driving the car with just the one hole filter instead of required two hole filter will make the transmission shift funny and leave you with no high gear. Please don't t ask me how I know (brain fart).

Was just driving around the block a few times, it would not shift into 2nd till about 27mph/then quickly into 3rd. so hopefully it's just a dumbass mistake, and did not hurt anything. The fastest I went was about 30-35mph. maybe a total of 1.5 miles

You should be OK. I drove mine farther before I figured it out. No lasting damage.

That's good to know...guess I'm not the only one that has done this. Did your transmission seem to shift strangely when you had the wrong filter installed ???

If the rear pump hole is blocked as you found out it will inhibit the shift with standard style valve body's. Full manual doesn't need the hole or the governor. Standard filter can be cut to add the hole with a razor knife. If its a billet filter extension, it can be drilled as well.

The extension has an O ring to seal it...I might be able to drill in a new hole. But no way to make a groove for another O ring. I guess I could just make a paper gasket ?
