Question: On the short block, are the freeze plugs installed cup side out? or cup side in so you can tap for expansion? ......also, use brass?
+ use permatex , ETC,sealant, or?
:eusa_doh:

Thanks Sonny

On the more modern engines (after 64 I'm thinking) they use the cup style and the cup faces out. Prior to that they used the more flat type (disc plugs) that you had to peen the center to expand. You can put a little permatex "brush in can stuff" to help with installation. I have used both brass and steel with good results.

Oh, if you refer to the disc plugs as to which way they are installed, the convex side goes out so you can smack the high point in the center to expand. The deep cup type just goes in with an old socket.

The flat type (disc plugs) that you had to peen the center to expand. That is what I had never Known, pre 64 rb's had them. That is why I asked.
Again thanks!

Sonny, you can tell for sure if they take the disc "welch plugs" if the hole in the block is stepped with a ridge for the disc to sit on. The early Hemis are like that. When I started to install the plugs in my 331 I asked around on The Hamb and the concensus was to use JB Weld on the disc style plugs. TR Waters even agreed and I take what he says with lots of weight.

Rusty, thanks, I do have the ridge in the hole on the block, so I will need the "disk style" plugs...take care,
Sonny
