We had at least three of those engines in the family; two Arrow cars and one D50, which had a five speed. They were surprisingly peppy for a four banger. If I could get traction in the car (it spun easily) it would give a 9 second 0-60 which wasn't bad for 1979. The Canadian versions had two valves only and didn't have the secondary MCA-Jet valve intake.

They were also very smooth with the silent shaft which was good enough that Porsche licensed it to use in their large four cylinder.
...but few people know that the counterbalance shaft was originally a John Deere patent. Usta ask a friendly acquaintance who brought in a 944 before we could get them here how is old Deere was running...

We had a 2.6 in a Plymouth Sapporo damn good car we bought new. But later on it was tired so we did the silent shaft eliminator kit.
O cool sounds great!! Yeah know I should have left it alone.
I thought I would gain a huge 1.5 hp haha

Yes mine was a 5 speed and had the jet valve. When it wound up it sounded like it had a power band like a 2 stroke bike.
Ran smooth as glass like you say.

What is a silent shaft ? I don't remember hearing about that back then.
A pair of balance shafts inline with the crank that rotated at twice crank speed to dampen out inherent vibrations.

The front chain driven from the crank goes to the lower left and upper right shafts. The bottom one also drove the oil pump.

Did John Deere have a patent on their balance shaft? They may have been using the original design patented by British inventor Frederick Lanchester in 1907. Mitsubishi substantially improved the design and got their own patent and started using in some of their engines in 1975.
