Yeah, those RR bearings had a cartridge that screwed into them. If the bearing overheated, it would emit a foul smelling gas. Wiseguys at work would occasionally get one of these cartridges, and heat it up so it would release this gas. Indoors, it would stink up a large area for quite a while!

They used to. Then they had the cartridges inserted into the roller bearing adapters. But now, (since the late 1980s) without a caboose crew in the back to detect the smell, they don't use them any longer.
