My heater core is leaking and i want to re-route the heater hoses to make a U-bend at the firewall and water pump until the new core arrives. Would this hurt the water pump since it will not be pumping water to the heater core and back? I don't drive it in the clod moths and never use the heater. This is an automatic 500 cid 1969 Coronet R/T with no a/c if this matters.

No, it will not hurt the water pump. It will still be pumping water through the loop. It wouldn’t matter if there was no flow through the heater lines since it is a centrifugal pump design and can still pump though the engine passages.

Thank for all the excellent responses. Time for a cheap heater hose to cut up.
