Ah, stereotypes...

I was in a welding class with a bunch of guys who "chaw"...gross. They'd leave their spit bottles full of brown crap all over the place, spit on the shop floor, and leave their tobacco turds there as well. They also looked like chipmunks storing nuts for winter. Most of them couldn't carry on a conversation without brown drool leaking from the corner of their mouth. Work upside down? That was entertaining. Can't imagine them on a date...

Of course, you and I being in the same neck of the woods pretty much, a lot of chaw here too....
I only did Red Man way back in high school and I did it Tug McGraw style - got some bubblegum soft
first, then wrapped it around the wad of Red Man and popped that back in.
It's what we baseball guys did in those days, part of emulating our heroes.
Chipmunk look indeed. :)

Snuff is more "socially acceptable" these days amongst the chaw sect; it's more easily concealed.
It'll buzz hell out of you if you have a few beers in you, too - well, so I hear anyways. *wink wink*
Even that is being phased out these days though, a combination of the Surgeon General warnings
and moreso employers and public places banning use being primary causes of that.

Where and how the term "Redneck" come to be? Even Google is a bit all over the place. But it's an older term that I thought? And of course, depends on what part of the country.

"As it turns out, "redneck" is a term that has been in use in English speaking nations outside of the United States for nearly four hundred years now. Its oldest roots trace to Presbyterian Scottish Covenanters in the 1600s, who fought against the royal interference in the church from the Stuart monarchy. The Stuarts believed in the divine right of kings, and as rulers usurped control of the church. In response, many devout Presbyterians signed covenants that promised loyalty to the church over the British King Charles of England. The Covenanters signed in blood to show their fervently held beliefs and wore red bandannas or neckerchiefs around their necks as a sign of solidarity. Thus, the term "redneck" was born."

That page also gives a proper definition original of the term "hillbilly".

Growing up I always thought it was a term for rural farmers who got their first sunburn of the year. Thus the beginning of their "Farmers tan." It showed more with white people. Thus crabby by having to work outdoors all day? (This was pearly observational from a 7 year old in the 60s.)

That would be a good bookend to "Soul Plane". No stereo types in that one.
