regret that one Mopar you passed on?

Back in about '03, I was at a local wrecker (that's known for having old muscle car parts&mopar stuff) asking them about brakes from a mid 70s dark, as I was looking to do the disc brake swap... Yeah that article had just come out then. While the guy behind the counter rudely told me "That won't fit!" (they're known for that too...) another guy that was there waiting offered me a 70 Dart for a hundred bucks, it was in nice shape but it had a small under hood fire nothing too major but I was just getting into my 68 and didn't have room for two projects where I was living at the time... But daaang a hundred bucks... knowing what I know now I should have got it and parked it in the living room for crying out loud

I had a '70 Cuda convert 383/4 speed yellow, black top and interior; I got $600 for it on a trade for a "demo" 73 Challenger 340 auto in '74. Before that I talked my folks into letting me buy a '67 GTO convert as a junior in HS...rare all optioned out car. Sold that in mint shape to a slug who wrecked it within three months...

Back in 1980, a used car dealer in Bordentown, NJ, had a bunch of 'cudas, Barracudas, Challengers, and Chargers (they also had lots of other brand muscle cars, but I wasn't interested in them, so I don't really remember what they had of those) and I was looking for a Barracuda. They had a '68 Formula S fastback with a 383 and I really loved that car. Somehow, I wound up buying a red '68 convertible. I quickly realized that I am definitely not a convertible person. I kept that car for a few months before leaving it as a trade in on an '80 LeBaron coupe. Years later, I saw that same Formula S parked outside an electronics store in Maryland. I know it was the same car because I went in, found the owner, and asked him if he bought it at Horseless Carriages in Bordentown. If I'd bought the fastback, I'd probably still have it. Although, oddly, I wish now that I'd kept the convertible but only because it would have gained value. I probably never would have really liked it.

Other cars were the Superbird I could have had for $6000 back in '81, but didn't have nearly that much money. However, I wasn't terribly disappointed over the Superbird as it had the standard bench interior with column shift and, from behind the wheel, had all the charm of a taxi. I could have bought a rust-free '71 GTX shell with air grabber hood for $1200 in the mid-'80s but stupidly passed on it. A couple of years after that, I could have had a rust-free '71 Charger R/T that had one damaged fender and a spun bearing for $3500.

Back in the 70's after I bought my Hemi R/T , I seem to have run across a Slew of Hemi cars right in my backyard. Being in my early 20's, really not settled into a career yet, living at home, and having no place to put any other cars , I had to pass. Oh Well!! here they are

1) 1966 HP2 Belvedere 2 door post.... 7000 miles some assy required......$2k
2) 1968 Hemi Road Road Runner Doilie custom paint (ugly) 16 k miles ..Moving out of State $1800.00
3) 69 Hemi GTX B5 Blue not running with all the parts $ 1500.00 . This car ended up in the hands Of one of our site members.... And was impeccably restored by said member. Also led him to start a business of restoring vehicles today This car shows up at many of our local shows.... ( A plug for Bob) She's a Beauty Bob!!
Those are the Biggies!... If we only had a Crystal Ball!

Kinda wish I hade my 61 Lancer wagon back. Had some great fun in that car. Always a head turner. Current owner who lives in SoCal drives the hell out of it

It wasn't so much the ones I passed on (weren't many) but the ones that got away after buying them! One that does stick in my mind was a 66 Corvette coupe back in 75 for 2500. It smoked some and the carpet was worn but other than that, it looked pretty decent. I really like those cars but for some reason, I passed on it. Ok, for the ones that got away that really stick in my mind is a 70 Challenger 440 RT convertible with all the options. X was pregnant and we were trying to buy a house and she hated the car. It was a driver but the Plum Crazy paint was coming off (this was in 83 when I bought it) and the white gut had bad door panels and I never did like white anyways. Another was a 71 340 Cuda that also had a white gut in the same condition as the rag top that I bought in 86 just after divorcing the X. At least I kept that one for 15+ years. Now I'm looking at maybe another divorce 31 years later but at least there are no cars involved that are worth much to anyone right now....

That lancer brings back memories! I worked in Sun city in 1976 and drove a 67' Dart slant six that used a quart of oil in 40 miles! My Brother had just gotten out of the Air Force, and bought a 1960 lancer 170 slant. We would race from 25th and Union hills to Youngtown out bell Road, , but neither car could clear 50 MPH! One Morning a Maricopa county Sheriff stopped us, and told us to get out of the way if we can't keep up with traffic! HAHA

My dad and I were at a show in 89' and he passed on an original 1967 turbine bronze Hemi 4 speed GTX with 15000 original miles for 12 k.

About a year and a half ago when I first started looking for my first Mopar, I missed out on an original 1969 matching numbers N96 Jamaica blue Roadrunner with 69000 miles in great condition. Was hesitant as it was 800 miles away. Knowing what I know now I would have been on a plane and drove it home a lot quicker.

Here are two not passed on. In the early 80s my uncles bought two 1970 Super Birds. Both 440 six packs. One Sublime Green and one White. They flew from AZ to Raleigh NC and drove them back. Bought the pair for $2500. Yes both for $2500. They restored them themselves, both were body men. My one uncle sold the white one in the early 90s but my other uncle had the sublime one until the early 2000s. Man those were awesome cars to grow up with and going to car shows with! I'll never forget when I was 10 riding to a show and at a red light blowing the doors off a GTO as my uncle punched it! First time I was thrown back in my seat! Great memories.

Apparently I did have a crystal ball.

I just didn't have any money :(

There was a 69 Hemi RR vert on GYC last night- they were saying it was a $500,000 car.

That would have been a pretty good $750 investment on my part :( :(

That's too funny. I was doing a Sunday morning cruise up in the mountains driving the Lancer. There were 10 cars in the group that I was leading. All with the exception of the Lancer were Bigblock Mopars. I was doing 50 which was the speed limit on the two lane windy road. We had cars passing us continually. Anyway, a county mounty pulled in behind me and hit the lights. I continued on until I could find a place to safely pull off. Pulled off the road and everyone else kept going. Sheriff deputy came up and said I was going too slow and holding up traffic thus creating a hazard for the other drivers passing. What?!!!! In WA STATE on a two lane road you have to pull over if you have more than 5 cars behind you. Even if you are going the speed limit. Go figure.... the deputy was cool, we visited a bit he told us to be safe and off he went.
