Haven't tried it yet:

What you do: Wrap the whole fruit in tinfoil and set it on the baking sheet. Pop it in the oven at 200°F for ten minutes, or until the avocado is soft (depending on how hard it is, it could take up to an hour to soften). Remove it from the oven, then put your soft, ripe avocado into the fridge until it cools.

You can also do it in a microwave. Cut in half to take out the pit, then with microwave safe plastic wrap, cover and heat for half a minute at a time until it reaches the softness you want. Then refrigerate.
 
Come on man. LOL had to say it. preheat oven 10 min, cook avocado 10 min, cool in fridge 20 min. Drive to store buy ripe avocado 15 min
 
You're not ripening it, just cooking it. Nevertheless, I may try it in a pinch.

The store, for some people, is not a short trip.
