Scary Engine!

Sounds like fun; a hole saw on the pistons to free the small end of the connecting rods!

Dont laugh to hard it works.Used to mess around with antique tractors where finding another engine wasnt a option.Block of hardwood the same size as the bore and a post maul works wonders too.

50% acetone and 50% ATF. Works like a charm.

I've been trying that on some old snowmobile parts;have had some success, but some of this crap is actually rust-welded together. Does seem to work better than WD,PB,CRC or anything else I've tried. Don't have access to "Kroil";some friends out west swear by the stuff.

Well, after letting one bank soak for the last 6 weeks or so, that side cleaned up nicely, and, a LOT of the rust has dissolved after being assaulted by strait Diesel fuel soaking in there for some time. The other bank is now in ATF and Acetone, we'll see. Lots of other things to do outside of this engine, like body work, when I need the engine, this will be it, or be a source for parts, or, end up as scrap, as it might be junk, 289s are out there, 302s are plentiful, as I said, we'll see. Here's some current pix.

Marvel mystery oil, a rubber hammer and a map gas bottle is your best bet for this one. I have unlocked dozens of engines with it. Also Mystery oil down the carb on a running engine frees up stuck lifters great. Just make sure the tree hugers are not around as it makes tons of smoke.

I've got a mid-60s Ducati single engine I've been try to free up for a year now. I've tried Coke, Vinegar, Acetone mixed with ATF 50/50 (it's been soaking a year in this), whaling on it with a BFH - it won't budge. I think I will try the hole saw idea next.

I'd think Coca-Cola is not the right ticket...too much sugar, and, it will evaporate easily too. I'm not too sworn to save this 289, just a passing interest to see if it can be saved; less money I'd have to put into the car as the plan is to flip it, put the money into the Fastback! It should get more money if the motor is original, but, not much more, but, it will make it easier to sell IMHO.

Got 'em all out, and didn't have to break anything either! Crank is likely toast as there's a chunk missing from one of the bearing surfaces, looks about .030 deep or more...

the crank is salvageable, they can flash chrome it and re-grind but is it worth it. where you are it is the center of the blue oval universe. when i go there to visit my little sis i snoop around a lot and every 2nd-3rd house has an old mustang or f-150 sitting around. went to my first pic-a-part down there. we don't have that up here. novel idea. anyway, there should be lots of cranks available down there. good for you getting it apart donny. it becomes a challenge don't it.

My 451 was way worse than that and cleaned up nice but I did scrap everything but the block. Good luck

Block I'm taking to have hot tanked, magnafluxed, and, polish crank (if its worth it) and measure everything to determine if block is good. Likely will need new crank, but, this is indeed Blue Oval country, so, finding these parts ain't going to be an issue!

Unless your worried about #'s matching crap, then the block & heads castings are the most important part in that regard, but yeah SB Ford they are a dime a dozen, not too hard to find, 289 parts are pretty cheap, they made MILLIONS of them, don't spend a bunch of money fixing something, that you can buy/replace cheaper than you can probably fix, most of the time....

probably not as bad as it looks.

probably not as bad as it looks. bfh and a 6 inch piece of 4x4 trimmed to fit. Oops missed page two.you already got it.

Its a non-MOPAR, but, still interesting! Here's the 289 from one of the Mustangs I bought. This motor is pretty bad, got lots of water in it, going to be fun trying to free these pistons! View attachment 89966

I have a penetrating oil out in the shop we order for the antique tractors we restore, we can fill a block full of this oil that is locked and it becomes free in 24 hours, will have to go out and look at the name as we have not bought any tractors lately.

Prognosis: #4 will need a new sleeve, need to bore 0.10 more, total of 0.40. Heads are needing some TLC; needs all new valves and seats, needs hardened seats, engine built in 1985/86 era according to rod bearing dates.

Machine shop said for $1200.00 they bore, sleeve, cam bearings, new pistons and rings, cam, and heads rebuilt, brass freeze plugs. I may launch on this.
