I am getting ready to install all the seat belts into my 70 RR. They are black but a few of them are faded to where they are almost a blue color so I’m considering dying them black again.
I’ve never tried this. I’m worried about the dye discoloring riders cloths.
Any sage wisdom from someone with first hand experience is welcome.
Thanks in advance,
Dennis

I did a really lousy set of black belts 2 years ago that turned out Fantastic using Rit dye. No color loss, no bleeding color on clothes, no complaints. Widely available in stores and online.

I've done mine with RIT fabric dye. No problems at all. Clean them good in a bucket with laundry detergent. Rinse them really well a couple times. Then mix the dye in a bucket of very hot water and put all the belts in. Stir occasionally. Remove and rinse well in cold water. Hang on a clothesline to dry. The ONLY downside is the original labels will be dyed also. Basically just follow the instructions on the package.

The stuff is made for dying clothing fabrics - there is no reason it should discolor riders clothes.

I used the small package - it was plenty to do all the belts. Did 'em all at once.

Agree, it’s been awhile, but I treated a set of faded black seatbelts years ago with very good results. I did a thorough detergent wash prior to soaking in the dye.

Thanks for the quick replies. Got a kit ordered. I will add some pictures of the process.

Just a caution, make sure the color change in the belt is not because it is so old that it is no longer safe to use. They do degrade over time. Otherwise dye sounds like a good idea.

I have only used the fabric/ vinyl die that comes in an aerosol can. Simple , fast and effective. Never had any issues, you can mask off the factory label and several brands are readily available locally. I like duplicolor

"ordered" !!!! You can't find this **** "off the shelf" ???

Maybe he lives in the sticks like me. I have to order a lot of things that aren't available "off the shelf" locally.

I’m 30 miles from any place that would have it. Now it will just be sitting by the front door before I need it next weekend.
