Mo look up "dipole " antenna on the internet. Or outside location if nothing else works. At work we used to wrap a coat hanger around the expandable antenna that comes on radio, then you had to rotate hanger for best reception.
 
For AM, generally a long wire will work, but it needs to be impedance matched to the radio. You can get a passive radiator like the select-a-tenna, or a tuned radiator from C Crane to boost performance (on the AM band).

For FM a dipole works good, and a folded dipole works even better. For these antennas impedance matching is mandatory.
