Like 493 Mike said, think seriously about it. Talk to your concrete contractor about it as a lot of them are installing the tubing themselves now. Even if you don't hook the system up right now it will be there when you are ready. Good luck and have fun with it.

Agreed on the radiant floor heat. There is a company on the west coast called BlueRidge Company (blueridgecompany.com) that has great pricing and excellent customer service. They will design the system for you if you provide a floor plan, and then give you a bill of material for everything. I dealt with them on my house and also my shop and have very pleased with working with them. If you buy enough from them, the shipping is free.

It doesn't cost much to get the tubing in the floor...you can buy the expensive stuff later. On my shop, I put visqueen down, then 3" foamboard and stapled the tubing directly to the foamboard and then wire mesh on top of that and poured concrete. In the house, I attached the tubing to the wire mesh and had less insulation below the concrete. The wire mesh/tubing are pulled up mid concrete in the house....but the contractor did not cut the concrete. In the garage they cut the concrete because they knew the tubing was 4" down.

Thanks for the tip but funding this is a stretch for me since I’m hiring out the labor. I’ll probably put the $ into insulation and I’ll use the wood stove I never installed in my previous shop .

i went with lots of insulation and a gas hanging furnace. 100,000 btu. My shop is 24x40 with a 12 foot ceiling. I was told it was to big and would be inefficient. The themostat is set at 45. The heat is always on. When I go out it takes less than 10 minutes to warm up. I'm in the shop nearly every day. It didn't increase our gas bill by more than $50-$75 a month.

I have a Hot Dawg heater in my garage. To put one in the shop I’d have to trench a gas line over 100’ or install a propane tank. Maybe a future upgrade

So we’re setting poles right now. This 3 point cement mixer is real handy. One load sets one pole. Hydraulic top link makes dumping easy. Have to run the engine at idle to keep from spinning drum too fast.

This weeks progress, 18 poles set, 4 to go. 2-1/2 pallets of 80 lb bags. Good thing we had a couple 20 year olds working for us!! Frame out next week.

Strength and to eliminate “rain” inside due to condensation. In the county here, the only inspections required are electrical and plumbing. Otherwise it’s the Wild West, especially on barns. The guy heading this effort is a Master Builder from Atlanta, he’s not shy about putting extra lumber where it counts and being precise on square and measurements . This thing is solid!
