So I’m painting a 69 Charger in silver metallic base. I plan to follow up with a House of Kolor Kandy. First complete car I’ve tried painting. The car is dis-assembled and on a cart for painting. I didn’t really appreciate how hard silver is to paint.

Everything on the car has an epoxy primer under a coat of polyester. Everything is block sanded to 600 grit.

Most of the car is silver except for the trunk lid. I hate Charger trunk lids. I have many many hours trying to get the trunk right.

So this base coat was a second coat going on top of dried basecoat sanded to 600 grit due to flaws found in the first coat.

l have a new inflatable paint booth that fits in my metal building. I discovered I need better lightin. But I got an excellent clean finish on the trunk Using the Devilbis DV1 gun.

My problem is I could tell when I did it that the paint was striping and I tried a cross coat and a flow coat but nothing worked.

My question is what now. I was going to lay down a coat of Eastwood Intermediate with silver metal flake followed by the Kandy and finally the clear coat. I assume the striped basecoat will still show through but I’m not positive.

Im tempted to sand off the base from the trunk and try again a third time which sux when DMD1696 is $1000/gal!.

Are there any other options to consider? It feels like Im learning everything the hard way currently!

Appreciate any comments!

Try searching you tube for how to do a drop coat or a mist coat. I'd try that before starting over. Silver is a real challenge.

air pressure, fluid adjustment, speed in which you move the gun, and distance from the job are all contributing factors

run a little 800 wet over the base when necessary, no need to sand it off
