Steering Box

Hi All:
My 67 440 GTX has too much play in the steering wheel. When going straight ahead, I can give the steering wheel about 6” of play without changing the direction of the car. On corners, I turn the wheel the same 6” and the car turns well but back-to-back curves in different directions can be a little scary. I have put in a short-turn pitman arm. Could the steering box my problem? Is it easy to replace? I am somewhat handy but not a pro mechanic.

You may be able to take some slop out of the box using service procedures. If not it's time for a new box.
Also check the pot coupler, that may need a rebuild. Grab the steering shaft above the coupler and turn back and forth to see where the slop is. Good luck!

It's not the easiest thing to replace but it can be done.

IMO looks like you need to get rebuilt or replaced. Depends on how much money you want to spend. You can get a firm feel power steering box but by the time it gets shipped here in Ontario you're looking at around $850(CAN) and you have to send them your core or pay extra $400. Yikes that's costly. Getting it rebuilt is under $400 here in Stoney Creek Ontario at John Stuart Power Brake. They are good guys, friendly and helpful. I've had many boxes rebuilt there. Last one I bought from them is a rebuilt police box. Its a bit firmer feel than OE and it bolts right up. I'm happy with it and was the same price. I replaced my pot coupler with one from Flaming River or John Stuart can help you with either. If you need any other parts try National Moparts in Beaverton Ontario. Saves the border hassles and much quicker.

From experience and the p.o. Of my car throwing 3 steering boxes into it all to find out it wasn’t the box at all. It was the length of the steering shaft therefore not fitting the coupler well and then not fitting onto the steering box correctly! They are collapsible with 2 little Bakelite pins and over time, they get fragile and it doesn’t take much to break them. If it’s been worked on before or the shaft has been out of the car, then maybe.. As Rockland stated could be coupler too and or all of the above.

Here’s a complete coupler rebuild kit with the extra coupler clamp. Really good idea!

I will say 6” is quite a bit for worn coupler and shorter steering shaft..but it’s old mopar so you never know! good luck!
