HI everyone. I'm having a problem with my steering column. The lock plate for the steering wheel is rubbing on my ignition switch. I bought this dismantled, what is something that I can look for that I put together wrong or left out?

Looks like your upper bearing is not in the housing correctly or is missing the isolator can you snap a pic more straight on so we can see how centered up the shaft is in the collar?

I'm not at the shop now, but I thought the upper bearing and isolator was in the piece above that is next to the steering wheel. Is there supposed to be one below in that tube where the shaft comes up and out under that plate?

Yes your right! Are you saying when the upper bearing housing is installed and the bearing along with the two snap rings are in place the lock plate still rubs? And is it rubbing the ignition switch or the plate on the lock mechanism?

Yes and it is rubbing on the ignition switch with everything in place

Sounds like an issue with the switch or the switch installation. The lock plate should hit the lock mechanism surface before anything else. Is it the correct switch?

i guess i don't know, it was a new switch with the car when i bought it. it looked like the old one. i will check that out and maybe order a new one to make sure.

Update
The steering problem is solved. When I took the ignition switch out to compare with another new one and the original, I found that it was the right switch, but under the screw mounting holes there was ridges from it being made. The ridges made it stand up too high and rub on the lock plate. I just filed the ridges off, used a caliper to make sure they were the same thickness and it works great now. Nice and smooth. I can't believe that I missed that when installing, but apparently I did. Thanks Beekeeper for your responses. I should have taken pictures of the ridges but I never thought until now. We will put the column back in today and should be back on the road.

Awesome glad you figured it out:thumbsup: thanks for letting us know what the issue was.

Hope it is correct now, but the upper bearing has a C clamp that if not used, it will do what you are saying.

Nice you figured out and fixed.

Just sharing experiences...I got a similar problem once and it was the C clip of top of bearing coming out of the shaft groove. Not a faulty clip, but damaged groove. I replaced the shaft anyway because steering wheel threads at the end of the shaft were damaged anyway, and found a NOS shaft
