Stock vacuum advance or MSD ignition

So ive been slowly trying to get a 440 big block rebuilt with some good performance parts, Aluminum heads, cam, intake, pistons etc; now im finally starting to run low on dough. My question is will a new electronic vac advance distributor be a good choice compared to a full MSD ignition system. An NOS vac advance distributor is only $150 comparded to an msd system which will be $500+. I plan on driving this engine both street and strip.

What's a FBO?

I've had good luck for MANY years with a stock Mopar electronic ignition distributor & a MSD-6A ignition box. I can't say the MSD is any better than the Mopar orange box I had before it, but it sure has lasted longer.

Don Gould (FBO owner) is a member here. he does electronic ignition stuff for mopars. I use their boxes and am pleased with them. less money than MSD stuff and you don't have all those wire stand offs at the coil. clean and simple.
 
MSD is a better product, but the stock is a decent base to start with. If you've modified the engine, you will have to modify the timing curves to work with it. MSD, in addition to better features, makes that tuning easier. Personally don't bother with FBO.
 
i'm using a mopar performance dizzy with a msd 6a unit on my hp 383 with good results . and a stock type mopar electronic dizzy and box on my stockish 440 with good results . both are street hotrods . the 63 maxwedge car has a mopar race dizzy with a 6al , it works great .

I’ve got the same setup as lewtot, never had any problems with it.

you might be surprised what you can do with a mopar distributor, chrome box and a good coil. people try to mask bad tune-ups with MSD stuff, don't get caught in the trap.
 
The best box you can buy is the Daytona sensors box.

For what you're doing, the mopar stuff is fine.

I vote MSD, I`ve had them on 5 diff. hotrods, one being a 426 hemi drag car. The hemi wouldn`t run right after switching to pent roof pistons (old hemi slang) , switched to the MSD, problem solved. The stock Chrysler hot ignition parts weren`t up to the task, back then. Two hot sbc engines, one a 600 horse 406, and now a 505' r/b wedge, all MSD 6`s .
 
MSD quality has gone down considerably. All made in china now.
You get exactly what you pay for.
For the OP and what he's doing, a properly tuned factory style ignition will work just fine.
If someone wants a capacitive discharge ignition, the Daytona sensors is the box you want

Don`t know about the foreign stuff, they have worked flawlessly for me for about 50 yrs or so. My fuel inj. system handles all the retards and rev limiting now too.
