That's exactly what happened in the late 1800s, when cars came out to begin with. There were electric cars back then - and they weren't subsidized by the government, they weren't pushed by any "movements"...and they failed.

For exactly the reasons noted above.

Know your history...or be doomed to repeat it.
 
Years ago I read a book where they said in the early 1900's that the automobile was going to be great for the environment in NYC because all the horse **** was creating a serious hazard. We've come full circle!
