The Thermoquad carb on my 74 Roadrunner 360 is leaking on passenger side. It's enough of a leak that it puddles onto the intake manifold. Because I'm new to thermoquads, I'm unsure how to proceed. I'm confidant that I'm not handy enough to rebuild it myself. What course of action should I take? Have somebody rebuild the one I have? Buy a new one? Or upgrade to a standard carb? And if so, what model and CFM. Thanks In advance.

In their day the Carter ThermoQuad was their equivilant to the Rochester QuadraJet In principle. The bakelite fuel bowl on the TQ is sort of fragile, subject to stripped threads and it sounds like in your case, possibly a cracked fuel bowl.

I believe the TQ was rated at 850 CFM @ 1.5" pressure drop. The nice thing about the design is small primary bores for high mixture velocity and great low end fuel distribution while offering huge secondary bores with an adjustable air valve. The problem with TQs is the lack of real tuning components...jets and metering rods. I believe a possible source for parts, both rebuilding and tuning, may be the Carb Shop, which if I remember is in Chicago or possibly a suburb of St Louis. Try Google-ing Carter ThermoQuad carburetors. Most guys just replace them with Edlebrock or Holley equals but the TQ has a spread bore mounting configuration, which will require replacing the manifold. If you are building or keeping an original car, only a TQ will suffice.
Do not be afraid of rebuilding it yourself....there is nothing scary or intimadating about a carb.....everybody (or almost everybody) has a next door neighbor, whose brother-in-law's cousins neighbor who has a friend that is a carb "expert" who knows all about carbs, except how they actually work. You'll be OK...there a lot guys on this forum that are ready and willing to help. PM me if you want and we can communicate.....and I'll try and walk you thru a rebuild or answer questions.
Cheers,
RJRenton

also in the sticky notes in the general mopar tech section there is a great article about TQ's

I've rebuilt many TQ's. In fact, I have 4 units on the shelf now. Don't be afraid to get a rebuild kit, new brass floats and have at it. Pick up a book on it, too. They even reproduce the phenolic bowls, if yours is cracked or damaged. Once properly set up, they are awesome!

Yes, indeed... even when we worked on these when they were barely a used car, if set up/rebuilt correctly, a good carb !

The Thermoquad if in good condition and set up correctly is indeed a great carb! I suggest you try to save it. If you have someone else rebuild it, be careful who you have do the work.
And if you must replace it with a new carb I'd seriously consider the "STREET DEMON".

First make sure the screws are snug, I had an issue after rebuilding mine with them coming loose. If not, it's probably leaking from one of the two rubber o-rings or the epoxy used to cement the botton of the float bowls has given up - both are repairable. You will have to disassemble the carb to determine what's going on. They are not that hard to rebuild and are a good carb when set up right, keep us posted.

IIRC, Harms rebuilds these to a restored level.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Also, who else restores carbs?

I have a holley #7855
it is a Thermoquad replacement carb with correct mopar linkage
it is 650 cfm, vacuum sec. speadbore, manuel choke
took off a motor home I took the motor from, been sitting so will need kit
