Welcome.
It's possible your distributor is 180 degrees off.
Do you know if it ran when parked?
Is the spark blue and crisp?
Fresh gas?
Try advancing timing.
Is the choke closed?

From the Evergreen state of Washington, a hardy welcome too the FBBO crowd. Seems like prior postings have covered lots of reasons why you are experiencing the starting problems. :welcome:

I got the car as a basket case. I did try starting it with the 4 bbl carb on it and it did fire up. I have check it for TDC and the distributor is in the right place. Last night I was testing the spark and it is healthy. I am using starting fluid to get it started. I think the 2 bbl manifold I put on is not right for this engine. I found that the engine is a 1978 400 and I heard that the intake post do not match up well to the cylinders. I am planning to go back to the 4 bbl intake and rebuild the thermos quad carb to see what happens.

welcome to FBBO keep us posted on your progress
