Hello Everyone, I am just getting started in the restoration of a 1973 Dodge Charger. I got this car as a basket case and have found that the VIN number does not match the engine block casting numbers. It appears that someone replaced the old 400 engine with one from 1976-78.
The question I have is this: Does this engine use the 2 bbl or 4 bbl carburetor? My research tells me that Chrysler discontinues the 2 bbl on the 400 for these last two years. If this is so, that may explain why I am having difficulty starting the engine with this 2bbl Holley

Thanks in advance for your inputs,

    Tim

There's a code on the bottom row of the fender tag that starts with an "E" - will tell you the original engine, either E63 for a 2bbl or E68 for a HP 4bbl. Regardless, it should start no matter what is installed now.

Welcome to the forum. Lots of good information and people here.

        Hi Tim, :welcome:

Your two barrel won't be a reason for the engine not starting; it won't know the difference under 3,000 rpm.

How do you all purpose I start the troubleshooting? I am getting spark to the plugs. I have verified I have the timing correct by setting up the distributor to TDC. I have by passed the ballast resistor to insure I am getting at least 11v to the + side of the coil. I have set the electronic pickup in the distributor to .010". I tested the coil primary(2.0 ohms) and secondary(10K-11K ohms). Could I have a bad ECU? How does one test that?

Are you getting fuel to the plugs?
