Timing 1970 440 HP

If this is a fresh motor then it could very well run hot for a while. My 440 did but now it seems fine. Timing 15 deg initial and 36-38 total is a safe bet. Having approx 8-10 deg of vacuum advance off the ported carb port should be fine too. A rich mixture will produce higher exhaust gas temps so you may have carb issues. I'm guessing you don't know what the compression is but doing a cranking compression test will give some sort of an idea on what's going on.

Are you running an overflow reservoir? Cooling systems work better when they are full and have no air in them....

Well I think i have the problem solved I added a 2300cfm push elec fan it seems to keep it at 190 so now I just have to see what it does in a traffic back up timing seems to be ok also mike
