I recently bought a 383 that came out of a 66 charger, I was told it is a 383 magnum. How can I tell if it is truly a 383 magnum? And what makes it a magnum engine. ?

The flat pad under the distributor should have "HP" stamped into it also.

If it was original to the '66 dodge it was not a "magnum" but the standard 325hp 4-barrel engine. A 1966 383-4 would use log manifolds as well. The HP manifolds came with the 383 Magnum in 68.

What do you mean by "log" manifolds, the block is stamped with a 65/66 date 11/29/66 I think. And it also has a Maltese cross, the person I bought it from had the tranny that went with the engine. But I don't know why he said it was a magnum.

cam, springs, windage tray and some carb differences

By windage tray, you mean under the intake or in the oil pan? The engine was disassembled when I bought it, so I don't know if it had one or not. And what's the difference in the cam and springs? This is the first mopar I have ever built, my Dad had a new 68 Roadrunner with a 383 when I was younger so I thought I would try it myself. Any help would be greatly appreiteated.

As stated above, if it is out of a 66 it is not a Magnum.

'log' exhaust manifolds are the stock looking ones that look like a log running beside the engine with short ports bolted to the heads. The Magnum exhaust manifolds are more contoured for better flow.

no stock 383 ever made that kind of hp in 66...

get the stamped numbers off the pad by the distributor
to figure out what you have..

manifold hp.jpgmanifold log.jpg

The left picture shows the magnum manifolds, the standard 325 hp log style is on the right. 325 4 bbl was premium fuel for 1966, sort of a low point as earlier and later versions had more power - you could get a dual quad 343 hp. version in 1962, and the road runner and magnum version from '68-70 was 335 hp.

Thank you for the help, it really helped a lot, as I move forward with this build...I more than likely will have more questions. Such as what is a good detailed book to show assemblies of cam and timing components, basically the whole engine. This is my first Mopar and I want to get it right. Thank you

That help dont come for free!! We need some engine ****
