I made it out to Quaker City yesterday for my first outing of the season.

New cam and lifters seemed like the engine was making similar power.

The big change was a sintered iron clutch with a solid hub. I had it set pretty tight to start with, so I didn’t burn it up right off the bat.

So on my 5th pass when I shifted to 3rd it got really ugly.

Really, really Ugly. Haven't dealt with busted 4 speeds, junk it or fix it?

Well, it ain't a bad synchro.... Engine is making some steam....

When I had my TKO apart I had all the gears & sliders micro polished & cryo treated....

I’ll fix it. I have a spare trans here. I’ll use the cluster gear, but the main 3rd- slider is a custom Liberty piece. I doubt if they have one on the shelf, so I might have to get creative there.

I always say I want a 4 speed. Until the realization sets in that cost and maintenance will be part of life. Sorry to see. I have almost every piece to build a old style slick shift (every other tooth milled off) 18 spline. All brand new speed gears, new input shaft, new cluster gear, case, shifter. But know that it would never live behind my stuff.

Yeah, I’m obviously knocking on the door of max capacity of an 833, 23 spline anyway. And I’m about 3 seconds slower than you!

It’s one of the reasons I haven’t built a bigger motor. I don’t feel like taking a $6k hit on a Gforce transmission.

I’ve heard that 3rd gear is the weak spot. I guess because it’s out on the end of the tailshaft.

At least I got out and made some passes in between the raindrops. Our first UMTR race is Sunday and now I really have to scramble.

For me, it would have to be a Liberty. Figure about $15K for everything to convert. And then theres spare parts.

Yeah, that’s a whole bunch of money, not to mention clutch stuff and the learning curve.

Not to imply that you have a lot to learn lol.
I should have said tuning curve.

No new technical info, but I ran a Chrysler 4-speed many years ago. Trans was proshifted by Liberty, I left at 5,000 rpm and shifted at 7,000 rpm used an aluminum flywheel and a three-puck clutch disc. At least back then NEVER use a solid hub clutch disc, hub should be sprung to absorb some of the shock. And a clutch car runs the fastest when it slips just a little bit.

I raced NSS and a couple of my fellow racers had some fast 4-speed cars and used aftermarket transmissions one seldom broke anything the other was always breaking something. Was discussing this with the racer that seldom broke anything, and he told me those old lessons of a sprung hub and allowing a little bit of slippage still applied. both those cars were in the 8's at the time.

My old Anglia 340 4-speed with a tunnel ram ran low 10's high 9's back in the early 80's I raced the car for 10 years and never broke a transmission.

I wasn’t crazy about going to a solid hub, but I wanted an iron disk and that’s how they come.

I have been using a 6 paddle disk these last few years. The problem that I’ve had is when slipping it the disk seems to wear too fast for my liking. The reason that hurts me is that frequent adjustments and bracket racing don’t go well together.

I know there are guys like you that seem to be able to run this stuff with no problem. But I’m just a shade tree mechanic and my driving is sketchy af. So I do the best I can.

Where did you get the cryo & micro polish done ?
I believe it’s worth it!
Probably strengthens the components!!
Thanks in advance!

I don't see a issue with a solid hub if it has low base pressure. I have a bunch of friends running sticks in Stock and S/S. Last year one stocker had a dead battery. I said let's push start it. He laughed. The base pressure was so low that pushing it wouldn't even turn the engine in gear.

I think I just need to get the pressure down where it belongs and it will be ok
