Hello everyone! Getting close to taking my 1969 Road Runner down the road for the 1st time after a 10 year restoration. We started the motor (383) Last week and all went well. typical loose header bolts, some leaks from the valve covers, etc. My knowledge base as it concerns the correct installation of the transmission (three speed on column 727 ) kick down lever is lacking. My question is do any of you have any suggestions as to how to hook up the kick down lever to the carburetor: what position? is the lever attached to a fixed point on the throttle bracket? or is it supposed to "slide" freely. if it slides freely, then how does the lever act to increase transmission pressures while accelerating? I have a holly carb with an adaptor designed for chrysler applications. I wish I could explain it better. My engine bldg er says if you dont get it right you can "burn up" the trans in less than a block! thanks for your responsse. Wild Bill

1 piece or 3 piece?

in general, disconnect the pin that holds the linkage to the carb.

pull the linkage towards you so it clears the carb stud.

push back on the linkage until you feel resistance.

adjust the threads so that the stud at idle puts just a small bit of pressure on the linkage.
(basically hold it where you felt resistance and run the threads out until the stud rests in the back of the slot, keeping some pressure on the linkage) maybe go a little more, more is better than less until fine tuning.

test drive the car and verify acceptable shift points, no slippage and ability of full WOT.

I'm sure the FSM has a more detailed procedure.

Alternate setting (or check)...

Un-hook the kick-down at the carb. Doesn't matter 1 piece, or more linkage. Bottom line is from kick-down/throttle pressure trans arm, to carb hook-up setting.
With linkage undone, push it towards the rear...should be free to a point, then you'll feel light spring tension...continue until it's fully back against it's stop. Hold it there.
Move the (carb) throttle arm to WOT (wide open). The kickdown should fall into place on the carb linkage pin, with slight clearance, so it does NOT bind. That's about where it should be to work right.
