Transmission whine??

Hi all,

I have a whine that starts immediately as I start up the 440. It follows along in speed as I rev the car. Msd iginition (not sure if this causes whine?), 727 reverse manual valve body w 3 speed megashifter. Shifts fine.. Car was used as a drag car and I am not sure how trans was serviced if ever.

Engine looks great and very responsive to the throttle, though car is slow off start in first to second gear. Seems tired.

I tried a burnout and it failed to spin tires, though the rpm was up. The trans has new filter and fluid that I changed. What could be the issue?

What do you know about the engine? Could it have a gear drive? That’s sort of what it sounds like to me.

Sounds like a cam gear drive to me too.

I do t know much about the build, was built for drag racing. Ill look into it, but what is a gear drive?

Gear drive, no timing chain.

Cam is driven by a set of gears (that whine as they are straight cut) instead of sprockets and chain which is quieter.

Could be a torque converter going bad.

Does it sound like a pump running dry?

Besides the gear drive whine there are no other sounds. Shifts fine, but just feel like it pulls as strong as it should. Would this be the torque converter?

I rebuilt a trans for a guy years ago. He installed it along with a new speed shop torque converter. When he got it all together, it had a whine and would hardly get out of its own way. He was pissed and called me to come and look at it, saying that I screwed up the tranny rebuild. After checking a few things, I told him that his new converter was no good. He pulled it out and had the speed shop replace it. The replacement converter worked fine with no noise.

Ok I’ll check tmrw, a burnt smell indicates burnt torque converter? Or just that a good look through of the trans would be necessary?

Burnt fluid can be from the transmission itself or converter .
It's just a decent easy test for the overall health of the transmission and converter.
